Short of the Week: Joanna Quinn’s Britannia

Tuesday 23 September 2014, by Abla Kandalaft, Lucile Bourliaud

This week’s short is an un-PC, explosive, speeded up history lesson: five minutes encapsulating a few centuries’ worth of British conquests.

Joanna Quinn made a name for herself as an animator back in the 1980s, her cartoons and dark humour are now instantly recognisable. Joanna is the designer behind the cartoon bears of the Charmin adverts and collaborated on a number of personal projects with her scriptwriter Les Mills.

In Quinn’s satirical short, the bulldog is a greedy, arrogant England, expanding its territory and power. The cunning visual metaphors brilliantly highlight the paradox of a nation that is now, according to Quinn, no more than a harmless little poodle.
